My local store doesn't carry True Lemon or some of your other flavors. What do I do?

Many stores don’t carry all of our True Citrus products. You can always fill out a product request form at the customer service desk of your local store or speak to the grocery manager to see if he or she can order it for you. Often it’s customer demand that will cause a store or grocery store chain to start carrying a new product.

To locate a store near you that carries True Citrus products, please search our Store Locator.

And if you can’t find your favorite True Citrus product near you, you can always order from our online store, www.TrueLemonstore.com (where we also sell exclusive items and larger quantities) or call toll-free to place an order at 1-844-LUV-TRUE (1-844-588-8783). 9
I recently purchased a box of True Lemon and the True Lemon in the packets seemed cakey and didn't easily come out of the packet. What caused this and what do I do about it?

All True Citrus products should always be free flowing. However, since True Citrus products are made from simple and clean ingredients and do not contain any preservatives, every once in a while some True Citrus packets will become sticky or cakey. This has nothing to do with where a customer stores their True Citrus product, but is due to a rarely occurring bump in the humidity in the manufacturing room where the packets get sealed.

If you purchase any True Citrus products that don’t meet your expectation in terms of product taste or product quality, simply email us at customercare@truecitrus.com or call us at 866-885-3666 and we are happy to send you a replacement. Please include your complete name and mailing address, the number of packets that need to be replaced and where you purchased your product. Also, if you still have the box, please include the best-used-by date (the ten digit batch number located under the UPC code) and whether this was your first time purchasing our product.

10
Where is the expiration date on the box?

True Citrus products don’t have an expiration date but use a “best-used-by” date. After this date, our products are still safe to use but start to lose some of their flavor potency.  The best-used-by date is stamped on the bottom of the package and reflects a date two years from when the product was produced.

Citrus Sachets (like True Lemon and True Lime): The best-used-by date is located on the very bottom of the box below the barcode. The date is an imprint that is the same color as the packaging and may be a little hard to see. For example, a best-used-by date of 040519 1111 has a best-by date of April 5, 2019. The “1111” that follows the date is an internal lot number. Our bulk boxes of citrus sachets will have a date printed or stamped on the package. The best-used-by date may be listed as “BB040519” or “0405191111.” The best-by date for this product would be April 5, 2019.

Lemonades and limeades: The best-used-by date is stamped on the very bottom of the package. It could read “Best By: APR0519S” or “Best By: 04/05/2019.” The best-by date for this product would be April 5, 2019.

Shakers and Spice Blends: The best-used-by date is stamped on the very bottom of the shaker. For example, a best-used-by date reading “0405191111” has a best-by date of April 5, 2019. The “1111” that follows the date is an internal lot number.

11
How long does True Lemon last?

All True Citrus products have a shelf life of two years if unopened. Once you open a packet, the shelf life is only a couple of days. The shelf life for True Lemon and True Lime shakers or our spice blend seasonings is also two years unopened. Once opened, it’s about six months.

12
Are True Citrus products organic?

True Citrus products are made with simple and clean ingredients but are not organic.

13
I added True Lemon to water and it doesn’t taste like anything. I kept adding packets and it still didn’t taste like lemonade.

True Lemon is not lemonade and so it’s not going to be a strong, sweet taste like lemonade. Instead True Lemon tastes just like you squeezed a lemon wedge into your water. The same is true of True Lime, True Orange and True Grapefruit. If you like a stronger, sweeter taste, then can we suggest trying one of our beverage mixes.

14
What is the stevia plant and where does it grow?

Stevia is a plant that has been used for centuries around the world as an herb and a natural, zero-calorie sweetener. Within the past five years, the FDA gave it GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status in the U.S., and now there are many stevia sweeteners on the market, including Truvia, PureVia, stevia  in the Raw, and Pure Circle, to name but a few. stevia is extracted naturally from the sweetest part of the stevia plant (called rebiana), and most commercial stevia products have a bulking agent added to give them heft. Once stevia is purified, it’s 300 to 400 times sweeter than sugar. stevia can have a bitter aftertaste, so many products that use stevia as a sweetener also add a small amount of sugar to round out the flavor (as True Lemon does). Stevia is grown in South America and Asia, and can also be grown in your garden.

True Products Ingredient & Manufacturing Questions

1
Why would I buy True Lemon instead of a fresh lemon?

Let’s be clear. We love lemons. But let’s be honest: lemons can be a bit of a pain for many of us. (But not all. We know there are devoted lemon lovers who would never use anything but fresh– we’re speaking to you, Martha Stewart!)

For the vast majority of us who love lemons but forget to buy them, buy them and then forget to use them, use them but don’t use all of the lemon so the rest goes bad, or who love fresh lemons so much we’d like to take fresh lemon taste with us but it’s a pain in the neck, True Lemon is for you!

True Lemon provides consistent, fresh-squeezed lemon taste, any time, anywhere and can be used so many ways it’s hard to count.

Fresh lemons, on the other hand, don’t provide consistent taste (because their taste depends on when they were picked), are seasonally expensive, go bad, can only be used as a wet ingredient, and aren’t great travel companions. (Try putting a lemon in your pocket or purse.) And don’t even get us started on bottled or packet lemon juice.

For an easy comparison between True Lemon, fresh lemons and pasteurized lemon juice, check out this chart.

For all the ways to use True Lemon and other True Citrus products throughout your day check out these videos or this list.

2
Are True Citrus products natural? Do they have artificial sweeteners?

All True Citrus products are made with lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit juices and oils and contain simple and clean ingredients. They have no artificial sweeteners, flavors, preservatives, sodium or gluten. To view the nutritional information of all True Citrus products, click here.

3
What is True Lemon made from?

True Lemon’s ingredients are the same as found in a lemon: Citric Acid, Lemon Juice and Lemon Oil. As of late 2016, all the ingredients we use in all of our True Citrus products are Non-GMO. However, there will still be product in the market that has our older ingredient line. To view the ingredients that are in each of our True Citrus products, click here.

4
Does True Lemon have the same properties as a fresh lemon?

True Lemon is made from real lemon juices and oils. True Lemon behaves almost identically to fresh lemon juice when using in water, drinks, beverages and when using in recipes.

5
How are your True Orange packets considered unsweetened when they contain sugar?

True Orange uses a tiny amount of sugar (<0.5g/packet or 1/8 teaspoon) as a natural bulking agent and not to sweeten the product. This small amount of sugar is considered to be negligible by the FDA, and does not have any effect on blood sugar levels when used in 16 ounces of water/beverages.

6
How is True Lemon made?

True Lemon is made from a patented process that crystallizes the lemon’s oils and juices, locking in fresh-squeezed lemon taste. (It’s the fact that True Lemon contains both lemon oil and juice that makes it special. Most lemon replacements contain just lemon juice.) Because True Lemon always delivers consistent, fresh-squeezed lemon taste, we believe it’s an excellent alternative to fresh, frozen or bottled. (And,with no undue modesty, we think it’s actually better than at least 2 of those!)

7
I see that some of your products have stevia in them. What is that and is it an artificial sweetener?

Stevia is an herb that has been used as a sweetener around the world for hundreds of years. Stevia was approved by the FDA to be used as a sweetener in 2008 and now is sold under the name brand Truvia, Pure Circle and PureVia, among others.

Because of our commitment to make only products with simple and clean ingredients, we were delighted when stevia received GRAS status (Generally Recognized As Safe) from the FDA so we could offer low-calorie, sweetened beverage options for our customers.

8
How many calories does a packet of True Lemon have?

A serving of True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange contains less than 0.01 milligrams of potassium, so a very small amount.

14
Do True products contain soy?

While our ingredient lines reflect our most current production, there will still be product in grocery stores that is older and, therefore, will have a slightly different ingredient line than stated on our website. Our older formulas did contain soy which was used in the crystallization process. Although only a minuscule amount of soy was used (to put it in perspective you would need to consume about 700 packets of True Lemon to equal 1 gram of soy), we still noted it since soy is an allergen. Our goal is to continue to improve all of our products so that they provide the freshest taste and the cleanest ingredient lines possible and our current ingredient line is reflective of our continuous quality improvement effort.

15
I noticed that you have a couple products now that have listed Rebiana (stevia) as an ingredient. Is this actually pure Stevia, or are you using Truvia? Also is this Stevia being extracted using water or chemical methods?

We use only stevia that is guaranteed a minimum of 95% pure, which is some of the highest in the industry. In addition, we purchase our rebiana only from reputable companies that do not use chemicals in the extraction or refinement of their stevia—only water-based extraction methods, which are safer for both the customer and our environment. We’re committed to not only the health and well-being of our customers; we’re also in tune with our delicate ecosystem.

16
What is your source of maltodextrin used in your shakers? Corn, wheat, rice?

The maltodextrin we use is solely derived from corn and is not used as either a filler or sweetener. Its only purpose is to help our flavor components disperse better when cooking, baking or seasoning. Without it, the consumer will get big hits of lemon oil with pockets of acid instead of a homogenous product throughout.

17
What are the phosphorus and potassium content levels in True Citrus products?

0 phosphorus and 0.01 milligrams of potassium (basically 0 grams).

18

25
Are True Citrus products made with organic fruit?

Our products are not made with organic fruit.

26
Are your products kosher and if so who is the supervising agency?

Yes, they are Parve and the supervising agency is the Orthodox Union.

27
I just purchased a new box of True Lemon and one of the packets was empty but covered in a red tape. Why?

It’s what’s called a “splice” in the roll that was missed in production.

28
Why is your True Lemon box so wasteful? The packets barely fill a quarter of the box which means it’s not very environmentally friendly.

We hear you and we actually agree. We are working on creating a thinner box which will have a smaller footprint. In the meantime, we hope that you’ll recycle your True Lemon box like we do!

29
Where do your natural flavors come from?

All of our natural flavors come from the source stated on the ingredient line (lemon, raspberry, black cherry, etc.)

Are the colors you use natural?

We use colors that come from only natural sources including fruits (e.g., grapes), vegetables (e.g., beets) and spice (e.g., turmeric).

31
Where does your citric acid come from?

35
Are all of your ingredients sourced in the United States?

While all of our manufacturing is done in the United States, as a global food manufacturing company, we utilize a number of sources from outside the United States to provide us with some of our raw materials. This is due to several reasons. Some ingredients, like stevia, aren’t yet produced in the United States on a large scale. (This may change within the next five years as more tobacco farmers move away from growing tobacco and start growing stevia.) Other ingredients which are made in the U.S. are very expensive vs. the same ingredient produced in countries like Mexico and Brazil and we are very cognizant about keeping all of our products affordable. However, regardless of where any of our ingredients come from, they all meet the highest standards and are the best quality we can purchase.

36
Where is your stevia grown?

Like most stevia, ours is produced in a state-of-the-art facility in China under strict food guidelines and stringent auditing requirements and meets the highest quality standards.

37
Is your product paleo?

How seriously Paleo are you? All of our True Citrus products are low-carb and, thus, are perfect fits for a Paleo diet. However, we encourage everyone to read our nutrition panels and make a judgment for themselves. (Check out all of our products, click here.)

38
Do your products contain flavonoids or Limonene?

Absolutely (and that’s great)! Because of our gentle encapsulation, we are able to maintain the delicate flavonoids (including limonene) that are naturally found in citrus oils. Flavonoids are a group of plant metabolites thought to provide health benefits through cell signaling pathways and antioxidant effects. These molecules are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. Limonene is found in citrus peels/rinds and is the thing that makes oranges and lemons smell orangey and lemony.

39
Is the sugar you use chemically processed?

The sugar we typically use is refined to remove any impurities.

40
Are your products Non-GMO?

Yes, as of late 2016 all of the ingredients we use are Non-GMO. We expect all of our products to be replaced by our Non-GMO ingredient lines throughout 2017. Please note that True Citrus products with our older formulations are still on shelves. We expect all of our True Citrus products to be replaced by our Non-GMO ingredient line throughout the first half of 2017.

41
Are your products vegan?

As of right now, our True Lemon, True Lime, and True Grapefruit are vegan, as well as all of the shakers except True Orange Ginger. Our powdered soft drink products contain sugar, which is not considered vegan.

Will True Lemon help me drink more water?

Water is good for you not only because of the great things it does for your  body but because it’s a great alternative to sweetened, caloric beverages like soda, fruit juice, sweetened iced teas and even drinks that you may not suspect, like Vitaminwater®, which has 120 calories and 32 grams of sugar in 20 ounces. (Here’s a fun fact: Just switching out one can of soda or other 120 calorie drink per day for one glass of water can lead to an almost 15 pound weight loss in the course of a year without doing anything else.) And all you diet beverage drinkers, don’t think you’re off the hook. Consumption of diet sodas has been linked to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes.

But lots of people either don’t like the taste of plain water, get bored of it or want to add a  beverage mix to their water but don’t want their water to turn into a chemical soup. (Check out this comparison chart.)

And that’s where True Citrus comes in. We’ve got you covered because we’re the only company that gives you a choice about how you want to flavor your water.

For those who like just a refreshing, light citrus taste we have 4 delightful choices for you.

If you want to add just fresh citrus taste to your water without changing your water into a beverage, then try True Lemon, True Lime, True Orange or True Grapefruit. Each sachet delivers fresh-squeezed taste and:

8
I have kidney stones and my urologist recommended that I drink water with lemon in it every day. Does True Lemon have the same properties as lemon juice for this condition?

First, we always recommend that you speak to your healthcare provider when considering health solutions for specific conditions.

Second, while we have never run any trials to test True Lemon’s effectiveness in helping to treat kidney stones, a urologist in North Carolina conducted a month-long study of some of his kidney stone patients. Half of his patients used fresh lemon and the other half used True Lemon (the doctor provided the True Lemon.) After a month, he looked at pH balance and found the results were exactly the same for both groups of patients. So, True Lemon had the same effect as fresh lemon, but the patients using True Lemon thought it was more convenient and easier to use than fresh lemon.

Finally, we have heard from many people who have kidney stones and have successfully incorporated True Lemon into their treatment program. Again, we always recommend discussing treatment options with your healthcare provider.

9
I am on dialysis and have to be careful about potassium among other things. What are the phosphorus and potassium content levels in True Citrus products?

10
Does the True Grapefruit offer any metabolism/weight loss benefits that your group is aware of?

It’s made with grapefruit oils and juices but we don’t make any specific claims.

11
Do True Citrus products contain Vitamin C?
True Lemon doesn’t have Vitamin C in it any longer. The reason for the change is because, since the beginning of our company, our commitment was to create products with only simple and clean ingredients. Towards that end, we continuously evaluate all of the ingredients in our products. While the ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) we were using is made from natural sources, the process it undergoes is coming under increasing scrutiny and, because of that process, is considered by more and more people not to be a natural ingredient. We did evaluate ascorbic acids that were organic but they were either so cost-prohibitive or impacted the flavor negatively. Wanting to maintain our commitment to simple and clean ingredients (and True Lemon’s great taste), and in absence of a good alternative currently, we removed the Vitamin C.
However, we are always looking to improve our products and will continue to look for a way to put Vitamin C back into our products. In the meantime, there are other beneficial reasons to continue using True Lemon. They include:
a. In customer survey after customer survey, True Lemon customers say that True Lemon helps them to drink more water. Many studies have shown that people who maintain good hydration throughout the day have improved alertness, better concentration, and overall enhanced cognitive performance compared with those who are dehydrated.
b. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. A 2013 survey of 3,003 Americans found that although Americans drank about 8 servings of hydrating beverages per day (including coffee, tea and soda), a significant portion of this is offset by drinking caffeinated beverages and eating a high sodium diet (both of which cause a net fluid loss).
c. True Lemon is a great way to help your employees drink more water naturally. We have literally heard from thousands of people who have said that because of True Lemon they have given up drinking sodas and other high-sugared or artificially sweetened beverages, both of which contribute to weight gain. Experts say rising consumption of sugary drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic, which obviously impacts your company’s healthcare costs. Studies have also found that using artificial sweeteners actually contributes to weight gain because they stimulate appetites, increase cravings for carbs and stimulate fat storage.
d. Finally, True Lemon is a great way to season food in place of salt. High salt diets impact the health of your employees too and lemon is a natural flavor enhancer.
12
What is the quantity of electrolytes per serving of the True Citrus products?

There are zero electrolytes per serving.

13
Can you use True Lemon as a detox drink?

Lemons are very popular in detox programs and we know that many people use True Lemon in place of fresh lemons or lemon juice.

14
Are the True Citrus products such as the True Lime Black Cherry Limeade considered low glycemic given they contain sugar?

Yes because the amount of sugar they contain is so small.

15
Are True Citrus products vegan?

As of right now, our True Lemon, True Lime, and True Grapefruit are vegan, as well as all of the shakers except True Orange Ginger. Our powdered soft drink products contain sugar, which is not considered vegan.

16
Do all your True Citrus products contain citric acid?

2
Can I use True Lemon in place of fresh lemon or bottled lemon juice?

True Lemon is a great alternative to fresh lemon juice or bottled lemon juice and can be used for cooking, baking and seasoning. In some recipes, it may be necessary or desirable to add an equivalent amount of water to replace the moisture the lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit juice provides. In these instances, add both the appropriate number of True Lemon, True Lime, True Orange, or True Grapefruit packets and the necessary amount of water. (Example: if a cake recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, use 4 packets of True Lemon and 2 tablespoons of water.) For measuring equivalents and conversions, please click here.

3
If I want to use True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange in cooking, what are the measurement equivalents?

One (1) packet of True Lemon equals the taste of 1 large lemon wedge and 2 packets of True Lemon is the equivalent of 1 tablespoon lemon juice. This is the same equivalency for True Lime and True Orange.

A medium lemon has approximately 2 to 3 tablespoons of juice which equates to 4 to 6 True Lemon packets.

A medium or average lime has approximately 2 tablespoons of juice which equals 4 packets of True Lime.

4
Can I use True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange in place of zest in a recipe?

If you are using the zest of a lemon, lime or orange for decorative purposes than you’ll need to use a fresh lemon, lime or orange. However, if you are using zest as an ingredient, you can use True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange. The equivalent is 2 packets for 1 tablespoon of zest.

5
Can I use True Orange in place of a fresh orange?

True Orange is not meant to replace the experience of eating a fresh orange or replace orange juice that you drink. Instead, True Orange allows you to enjoy the essence of fresh-squeezed oranges in delightful new ways. Add to your water or iced/hot tea. Sprinkle on fruit, fish or chicken. Replace orange juice or zest in recipes. For True Orange recipes and more, click here.

6
Where do I store True Citrus products?

Many of our customers keep their True Citrus products out on the counter, in their cabinets, or in their purse so they are always within easy reach. On our online store we sell a True Lemon table-top caddy and a True Lemon on-the-go mini-tote packet holder. (To see these handy accessories, click here.) True Citrus products should not be exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time.

7
Do I need to add water when using True Lemon in place of lemon juice for a recipe?

You only need to add water if the recipe you’re making needs the moisture from the juice as well as the lemon (or lime, orange, grapefruit) taste. Most recipes really only want the lemon taste and don’t need the moisture. For a recipe that needs the moisture from the juice then you would add the equivalent of water and the True Lemon/True Lime/True Orange/True Grapefruit packets. (For example, if the recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of lemon juice you would add two packets of True Lemon and one tablespoon of water.)

8
Can True Lemon be used in place of real lemon when canning/preserving?

Yes, many people use True Lemon when canning or preserving.

9
Can True Lemon be used to make jams or jellies that need the lemon for the added pectin to jell?

Yes, we’ve heard from customers who use True Lemon as part of their jelly making process.

10
How many of the True Orange packets would I need to use to equal 8 oz. of orange juice?

You can’t really make orange juice from True Orange. You can make a 100% delicious orange drink, though. To make, add sugar or your favorite sweetener to taste and six to eight packets of True Orange to 16 ounces of water. (Add more packets for a stronger orange taste.)

11
I see a recipe that calls for two True Lemon packets but I only have the True Lemon shaker. What is the equivalent?

A serving of True Lemon shaker = ¼ teaspoon and so the packet to shaker equivalent is typically 1 to 1. So, for example, if a recipe on our website calls for two packets of True Lemon you would use  ½ teaspoon from the shaker. For more measuring equivalent conversions, click here.

2
Who came up with the idea for True Lemon?

David Schleider, the founder of True Citrus Company, came up with the idea for True Lemon in 2001 while having lunch with his father. A longtime lemon lover, a chef by schooling, and an inventor by passion, David was waiting for another bowl of lemons to be brought to their table when he had his “aha” moment. He wondered why fresh lemon taste couldn’t be more convenient, as easy as opening up a packet of sugar. He spent the next three years working on True Lemon to make sure the taste was just right before starting True Citrus Company (formerly Grand Brands) in June 2003.
