Nuts Beat Drugs in the Fight Against Bad Cholesterol
Don’t dump your Lipitor, Crestor or Zocor yet – but there is good news for the 1 out of six Americans who have high levels of “bad” cholesterol. That's the kind that means they’re almost twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as someone whose total cholesterol is in a healthy range.
A new study says that including things like soy protein and nuts in your diet lowers or 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) more than statin drugs or a low-fat diet!
In the study, a group of participants ate handful of almonds or walnuts every day, and also ate soy and tofu products instead of milk and meat products as much as possible.
Their LDL cholesterol-lowering success was much better than a group that followed a high-fiber, low-saturated-fat diet rich in produce and whole grains, which is the diet usually recommended for lowering cholesterol.
The nut and soy group had their LDL cholesterol levels go down between 13.1 percent and 13.8 percent after six months. Participants on the low-saturated-fat diet had just a 3 percent reduction in their LDL cholesterol.
