Is Vitaminwater Good for You?

OK, we’re not trying to point fingers and we’re not trying to be mean.  We are just trying to “keep it real.” So, Vitaminwater – we have to expose you for what you really are!

Now we realize the fanfare that surrounds Vitaminwater, and we get it. Their brilliant branding makes it seem like some sort of miracle elixir. But all the clever marketing in the world doesn’t make up for one true and unavoidable fact: it’s just not very good for you.

At first, it seems healthy and hydrating. The names of the different flavors might even make you feel better about yourself – but let’s face it, we KNOW better. But who doesn’t like the promise of Energy, Renewal, or our personal favorite, Essential?

But there’s nothing very “essential” about it. Here, we’ll let you decide…behold, the ingredients:

Vapor distilled/deionized water, crystalline fructose, citric acid, vegetable juice (color), natural flavor, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), vitamin E acetate, magnesium lactate (elecrolyte), calcium lactate (electrolyte), zinc picolinate, monopotassium phosphate (electrolyte), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6), cyanocobalamine (B12).

Scary, right? Now, here are the nutrition facts per serving (and remember, each bottle has 2.5 servings):

  • Calories: 50
  • Total fat: 0g
  • Sodium: 0mg
  • Potassium: 60mg
  • Total carbohydrates: 13g
  • Sugar: 13g
  • Protein: 0g
  • Vitamin C: 40%, Vitamin B3: 20%, Vitamin B6: 20%, Vitamin B12: 20%, Vitamin B5: 20%
  • Potassium: 150mg per bottle

That’s 125 calories for the entire bottle, and 32.5 grams of sugar! That is the entire recommended daily intake of sugar – all in one bottle. Calling Vitaminwater “water” slanders water’s good name. If you want to add flavor to your water, there’s a better way to go.
