In a recent journal published by the American Heart Association, it was discovered that women who drank a significant amount of artificially sweetened beverages each day (two or more) had a 23% higher risk of stroke, and were 29% more likely to suffer from heart disease than other women included in the study. 

Although no understanding was found about why artificial sweeteners caused such a big spike in stroke risk, it is difficult to ignore the correlation.
