The Best Healthy Alternatives to Coffee Creamer

Changing one small daily habit is a fantastic way to make positive long-term changes. It can be something as simple as choosing to walk to the store rather than drive, or swapping one sugary soda a day for True Lemon Wildberry Lemonade

One of our favorite ways to cut back on empty calories is to change-up the morning coffee routine. There is a lot of added sugar in flavored coffee creamers, and even just an ounce of half & half contains around 40 calories. Think about if you also add a scoop of sugar to that, or if you have more than one cup of coffee per day!

We have come up with some fun ideas to spice up your morning cup of Joe with more flavor and less empty calories.

Healthy Coffee Creamer Alternatives

Fresh cinnamon creates a sweet taste sensation that helps to smooth any bitter edge that coffee might have. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is an added bonus when beginning your day. Although real organic cinnamon costs a little more its definitely worth the price. Cheaper versions often contain added fillers, so get the good stuff and use sparingly.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Don't knock it till you've tried it! Just a splash of apple cider vinegar adds a wonderful flavor to coffee, especially when combined with a few drops of bitters and a dash of apple pie spices. This is excellent in hot or iced coffee, and you'll swear it tastes just like apple pie!

Cacao + Honey
Unsweetened cacao is the base of all chocolatey sweets, just without the sugar added in. Be sure to read the ingredients to make sure the only thing the package contains is unsweetened cacao, then add one teaspoon to your coffee with a 1/2 a teaspoon of honey. Natural honey is better than white sugar, and the combination of cacao and honey will be just enough to tantalize your taste buds without adding any creamer.

Coconut Cream
The calorie content may be similar to regular cream, but coconut cream is a great alternative to dairy if that is something you have difficulty digesting. It is perfect in iced coffee, and froths up just like steamed milk with a submersion blender. It doesn't even need sweetener, but add a dash of cinnamon and True Orange Ginger for some extra bright and spicy flavor. If you gravitate towards adding cream or sugar to your coffee because coffee tastes too bitter, there are a few other tricks you can try:

  • Switch to a higher quality coffee.
With coffee, you definitely get what you pay for. If you're on a tight budget but need a heavy dose of caffeine every day, consider substituting other types of drinks or reducing your coffee intake overall. Your health will be better for it, and you may enjoy the taste of quality coffee without adding any cream or sugar at all.
  • Get a coffee grinder and purchase whole bean coffee.
Grinding your own coffee beans at home ensures maximum freshness and flavor. Luckily the grinder doesn't need to have a bunch of settings or fancy features to get the job done either.
  • Choose a different roast.
If you usually drink a dark roast with cream and sugar, try switching to a medium or light roasted coffee (the package will indicate the type of roast). Many people think that coffee has to have a strong taste to wake them up, but lighter roasts are just as caffeinated and have a smoother and more mellow flavor.
When in doubt, ask your grocer or local coffee shop barista for recommendations. No matter how you drink your morning wake-up juice, there are plenty of ways to make it a little healthier to start your day off right!
