Why do I crave snacks?
Often a blood sugar imbalance is to blame when we have a strong craving for snacks in between meals. If we are eating meals that are well-balanced with healthy fats, good protein, a lot of veggies, and whole grains, they should maintain a steady burn of energy for our bodies throughout the day.
However, if our meals are heavy with refined carbohydrates (such as white rice, pasta, processed cereal, doughnuts, bread, etc.), and low in healthy nutrients, we will burn through that energy much faster at a high intensity. This causes blood sugar to spike up, then dip way back down once our bodies have processed through the carbohydrates.
I thought that eating 5-6 small meals throughout the day was a good thing?
There is a belief that eating small meals throughout the day (rather than 3 large meals) is more effective in burning fat, and keeping your metabolism high. However, there isn’t a lot of science to back up this claim, and often we end up eating more calories throughout the day when we eat meals more frequently.
In fact, eating too many meals during a day can cause many more high and low spikes in blood sugar. Eating snacks causes our bodies to constantly have to break down food throughout the day for energy, rather than processing any leftover fat that we already have in our bodies.
How do I stop snacking?
Focus on incorporating slow-burning foods, such as fiber-rich vegetables, healthy fats like nuts and seeds, and proteins such as beans and grass-fed meat into every meal. Include a wide array of colorful fruits and vegetables, and little to no processed foods on your plate.
When your body is slowly burning through these healthy nutrient-dense foods, you will have more sustained energy throughout the day and be less likely to reach for a snack.
Staying hydrated is another great way to resist the temptation of a snack. Before you start chomping away on a granola bar, drink a large glass of water with True Citrus. Many times hunger is confused for thirst, so drinking a big glass of water is a good way to satiate your body.
When is snacking good for me?
When you genuinely need the energy. If you’ve been working hard to create balanced meals, but during the afternoon-energy-slump notice you might not make it to dinner, have a small snack so that you don’t go overboard when you get home.
Some great snack ideas are: a handful of raw nuts, a hard-boiled egg, some beef jerky, seaweed chips, unsweetened coconut chips, a spoonful of unsweetened almond butter, olives, or crunchy vegetables.

If you constantly crave snacks throughout the day, take a step back and look at your whole diet. Finding the right balance of nutrients will ensure that you’re maximizing your energy, while eating the right amount of calories to maintain a healthy weight.
