The Best Hydration Tips to Get You Through the Summer Heat

The Best Hydration Tips to Get You Through the Summer Heat

Summer heat waves are already hitting hard all over the U.S. Staying cool and calm this summer isn’t just about donning your swimsuit to lounge by the pool, booking a destination vacation, or preparing your skin for the outdoors by slathering on that sunscreen. Water is ultimately the key, and vital for making sure your body is happy, healthy, and hydrated.

Dehydration is a real problem that occurs during hot summer months, and can leave you feeling lethargic, unfocused, and with a pounding headache. With doctors saying that about 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, how do you increase your water intake easily? Here are some of our favorite tips for staying hydrated in summer, and all year round.

Wake up, drink down

Many people feel tiredness from dehydration whether they are morning people or not. Wake up your body and your mind after a night of sleep by drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning. Throughout the night our bodies are slowly dehydrating, so perk your cells back up quickly with a big glass of water with True Lemon

Freeze a bottle, fridge a bottle

A wonderful trick for staying cool and hydrated throughout the heat of summer: chill your water ahead of time. Fill a few plastic water bottles ¾ of the way full and place them in the freezer. (It’s important to not fill them all the way because water expands as it freezes - this is also why you should use plastic rather than glass.)

Place additional bottles in the fridge to keep them cool, then when you’re heading out for the day grab one bottle from the fridge and a frozen bottle from the freezer. Place both bottles in a gallon-sized zip top plastic bag or soft sided cooler (to avoid condensation), and toss them in your backpack or tote bag. The ice bottle will keep the fridge bottle cool, then as it melts you’ll have an additional supply of ice cold water to drink.

Even better, add a packet of True Lemon Peach Lemonade to those bottles ahead of time before popping them in the fridge or freezer so that they’re all set to grab and go!

Keep it cool but not TOO cool

Ice cold water is a huge temptation during a particularly hot day. However, freezing cold water will slow down your rate of drinking significantly. Keep a pitcher of water in your refrigerator to mix with tap cold water, half and half. This way your water will still be cool but not too cold to drink in larger quantities.

Feeling peckish? Water first

Often we confuse signs of dehydration for signs of hunger. To ensure you’re getting enough water each day, whenever you feel a pang of hunger drink a small glass of water first. This will not only make sure you can differentiate between the feelings of hunger and thirst, but also add another glass or two to your water intake for the day.

Eat your water

When you do have meals, be sure you’re filling your plate with at least half of fruit and vegetables. This is a great way to increase the amount of healthy vitamins and minerals you consume (and maybe even drop some weight, if that is one of your health goals), but also increase your hydration. Yes, eating fruits and vegetables actually makes you more hydrated!

Fresh produce can’t grow without plenty of water, so all of those crunchy veggies and juicy summer fruits are full of it. Think about tomatoes, berries, cucumbers, watermelon, zucchini, carrots, green lettuce, and celery. Fill up your plate with these colorful foods and keep your body healthy and hydrated!

Switch out for a mocktail

A cold beer or glass of wine on a patio can feel like such a treat, but nothing will dehydrate you faster than alcohol. On top of that you’re drinking a lot of empty calories and sugar, making everything even worse. Try swapping out that alcoholic beverage for sparkling water over ice, mixed with a packet of True Lime Watermelon Limeade. It will feel like a refreshing treat that will boost hydration without any risk of a terrible hangover.
