How to Love Yourself this Valentine's Day | Self-Care Tips

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it is a wonderful time to focus on loving yourself with some self-care. 

There is a huge misconception that self-care is self-ish. However when we don’t practice self-care regularly and neglect our basic needs, we can put our health at risk. When we set our personal care aside, we often make poor choices with food, have higher stress levels, sleep poorly, and much more - each issue compounding the next making it harder to break the cycle. 

This Valentine’s Day, be your own valentine! Use this weekend to take time to yourself to rest and reset. These self-care tips will help get you started. 

Self-Care Tips for Loving Yourself this Valentine’s Day

Take stock of what you have. 

Many studies show that people who practice gratitude on a regular basis feel happier and more content than those who do not. Today, write down 10 things you’re grateful for and why. Meditate on each note you write down and feel that gratitude in your heart. 

You can go even farther by putting this into practice every day. Take a glass jar, and every time you think of it write down something you’re grateful for on a piece of paper. Then fold up the paper and place it in the jar. On Valentine’s Day next year, open the jar and read all of the things you wrote down one by one. 

Treat yourself. 

Don’t just indulge with sweet treats (but hey, if you want to enjoy some chocolate today, have at it!), but indulge in some different types of treats that you don’t normally allow yourself today. Get a manicure, get a massage, take yourself out for a fancy drink, or walk around your favorite store and buy yourself something for no reason at all. Make today about you, and let your heart lead you to whatever little indulgences you desire! 

Get hydrated.

Have everyone bring a drink or appetizer to share, and then swap clothes. Anything left over gets donated, and you might even end up with some great new items for free. 

Take a different route. 

Routines are great, but the reason we fall into routines is because they don’t take a lot of brain power. Our brains can simply switch off and get us to where we need to go. Instead of taking the same route to your destination today, try a new one. Take in your new surroundings, and give yourself a little extra time in case you see a coffee shop or store to stop at that you didn’t notice before. 

Making yourself and your health a priority is key in maintaining balance throughout all facets of your life. There is no better time than now to start practicing self-care as a part of your regular healthy routine.
