Healthy & Safe Ways to Celebrate the Holidays

This holiday season, it’s more important than ever that we all do our part to keep each other safe. Health officials recommend keeping social gatherings to a minimum or avoiding them all together, which means that holiday celebrations will have to look a little different this year.

Although the holiday season can’t include big gatherings or celebrations, there are still plenty of ways to make it special! Here are some great ways to settle in for a festive holiday at home.

Healthy and Safe Ways to Celebrate the Holidays at Home

Host a Christmas movie trivia night over video call

Trivia nights are always fun, and easy to set up and host through a video call. Look up fun facts about your favorite holiday movies and put your friends and family to the test. Have everyone make a celebratory holiday cocktail to enjoy and toast with while on the call.

Have a pajama party

Have your loved ones each choose a ridiculous set of pajamas for someone else in the family, friend group, or roommate group to wear. Everyone has to wear their gifted pajamas during the holidays or on the next family video call!

Bake holiday cookies

This is one of the most delightful and easiest ways to make the holiday feel special! Get inspired by binge-watching Christmas episodes of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix, and tie on that apron. Challenge yourself by making iced sugar cookies or layered mini cakes. See whose creations come out the best.

Dive into some new and challenging recipes

Ever tried to make Julia Child’s famous Coq au Vin? How about a multi-tiered cake? There’s no better time than the present! Since there are less holiday parties or gatherings to attend we all have a little more time on our hands, so try out some new recipes and challenge yourself. Here are some great recipe ideas to get you started.

Make your own Christmas ornaments

Commemorate making it through this year with some special homemade ornaments. Search “ornament making supplies” on Amazon and see what comes up, and get everything you need to create them shipped straight to your door. Crank up those holiday tunes and get crafty!

Create a new festive cocktail

Obviously we love this activity since we recently created a whole list of holiday cocktail ideas. Channel your inner mixologist and make something special this year. Take pictures and share your creations with your friends, then save your favorite recipes to make again as a new tradition for years to come.

Learn a new game to play together

There are so many options for games these days - whether video, board, or card. Learn a new game this year to play with your family at home, or find one to play together online with others or over a video call. Even a classic game like Pictionary is possible to do over a video call

Have a holiday book storytime

When was the last time someone read a story to you? No matter what your age, it’s a delightful and special experience. Light a fire (or search “fireplace” on a streaming platform) and cozy up under a blanket with some tea and a classic storybook like The Night Before Christmas, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, or The Polar Express. Read the book out loud to your family at home or over a video call.

The big takeaway is that this is just one year of many that we have to enjoy the holidays. It may take sacrificing some usual plans and traditions in order to be safe, but you can always create new ones! You may find that with a little creativity this will be your best holiday season yet.
