How Food Banks are Fighting Hunger in America

How Food Banks are Fighting Hunger in America

Did you know that 1 in 9 Americans are living with food insecurity - as in, they do not always know when or where their next meal will be available to them? Can you imagine not knowing when you or your family would be able to eat next?

It is difficult to believe that this is an ongoing issue in America. The truth of the matter is that with more people out of work than ever due to this pandemic, even more families are being negatively impacted by the inability to access food regularly.

September is Hunger Action Month, and True Citrus has partnered with Feeding America to address this crisis and help relieve hunger and food insecurity for millions of Americans. Unsure about how Food Banks work in helping? We are here to answer your questions.

What is a Food Bank?

A food bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to charities that support hunger-relief initiatives, or directly to those who are in need.

Food banks usually act as storage and distribution centers to hunger-relief charities, and act as a hub for smaller agencies. In the U.S. they often do not give out food directly, but instead coordinate food distribution with the help of volunteers and some hired staff.

Here is more information about how food banks work.

How Do Food Banks Make a Difference?

With the large number of food bank networks, Feeding America alone helps provide over 4.3 billion meals annually. This means that they support 1 in 7 Americans that face hunger in living more secure and stable lives. This includes:

  • Securing food from natural food & grocery manufacturers, retail & shipping locations, farms, and governmental agencies
  • Managing the shipping and receiving of food, as well as quality control and storage oversight
  • Distribution to those who need it most
  • Partnering with like-minded businesses to create a nation-wide community around ending hunger
