How to Stay Home and Stay Connected with Loved Ones

It can be a difficult adjustment when holidays roll around that you would normally spend with family and friends. With spring now here and Easter coming up soon, practicing social distancing can be hard when you usually spend this time with others.

Thankfully, there are plenty of other ways to connect during this time. There are a wide range of apps and software programs that were built just for the purpose of helping people to communicate virtually. There is no reason why you have to sacrifice family time even while being safe, responsible, and staying at home.

How to Connect with Family & Nurture Relationships While Social Distancing

First, make sure loved ones are ready and all set up.

Older relatives may need a little extra guidance with getting set up to chat virtually. Have a phone call with them ahead of time, or even share your screen to make the set-up process easier for virtual video calls. With the learning curve of technology, and the older population now being thrown into using it regularly, taking steps beforehand for set-up will help quell any frustrations later on.

Schedule a virtual video call for brunch.

Encourage everyone to make a fun brunch-style meal, including pancakes, eggs, and all the fixin’s. Have a virtual “toast” with mimosas or coffee during the call, and share what you’ve been up to. Be sure that the conversation isn’t entirely on the topic of the Coronavirus, to keep spirits high and encourage positivity. Some questions to ask each other:

  • How have you been staying active lately?
  • What amazing shows have you been streaming?
  • Anyone have any delicious healthy recipes to share?
  • Has anyone started a good organizational project, or a new craft?
  • What podcasts are you listening to?
  • Have you started reading a good book?
  • What is the funniest encounter you’ve had with someone since social distancing began?
  • Name one positive thing you’ve learned about yourself in the past week.
  • Name your next future travel destination.
  • One at a time, everyone take a turn to give a compliment to each person on the call.

Deliver Easter baskets or care packages.

Don’t make a special trip to the store (it’s best to spread out your grocery visits to limit exposure), but the next time you’re shopping add a few more fun things to your cart that loved ones might enjoy. Think dark chocolate, a bottle of wine, nail polish or lotion, healthy non-perishable snacks like nuts or jerky, or of course a box or two of True Citrus to help them enjoy drinking water more than ever (and stay hydrated and healthy).

When you get home, wash your hands and wipe down the outside of your purchases with disinfectant wipes before packing them into a clean bag, basket, or box.

Stop by a loved one’s home and leave your goodies outside the door, letting them know to check their doorstep or porch for a gift! Schedule a video call with them so that you can see the joy on their faces when they open it.

Give snail mail a reboot!

Start writing and mailing letters to loved ones again. Everybody enjoys getting something other than a bill or junk mail. This is a fun and thoughtful way to spread joy to the people you love. Not sure what to write? Here are some ideas:

  • A unique poem or silly haiku
  • 5 of the most favorite memories you’ve had with them
  • An inspirational quote from a book you’re reading
  • All of the places you plan to visit
  • The first 10 things you’re going to do once local businesses reopen
  • A list of 10 reasons why you love them

Now more than ever it is important to strengthen bonds with our community, friends, and family. Although these are difficult times, fostering strong connections with our loved ones, talking about our hopes, dreams, and fears, creating healthier relationships, and encouraging positivity is a wonderful way to celebrate Easter and the new spring season in a truly positive way.
